Full Description

Background

2253 The Nine of Cups Kayta was the eldest daughter of Josef, a sheep herder living in the remote region of Tatra in the Carpathian Mountains. Her mother died when she was still a little girl. The only other member of the family was her younger brother, Uzo. Unknown to Katya was that her mother was a rogue telepath. Telepathic testing in the Carpathian region was patchy at best. Eventually caught by PsiCorp?, she was given the choice of leaving her husband Josef to join the organisation, or be to forced to take sleeper drugs for the rest of her life. Faced with such a decision, Katya’s mother chose love over enforced brotherhood. Yet the drugs eventually sapped her will to live, and she committed suicide. Josef never forgave PsiCorp? for what they did to his wife. Katya’s mother left a gift to her daughter. It was a music box which had been in her family for generations. She had told Josef that she used the melody of the music box to calm herself whenever she was scared or had bad dreams. Josef passed on the advice along with the music box once Katya was old enough. The young girl took the lesson to heart, and constantly hummed the melody, day and night. Just before her sixteenth birthday, Katya started to have visions. Her father recognised what was happening and cautioned his daughter to keep her ‘dreams’ to herself. Frightened that his daughter and maybe his son too would be taken away by PsiCorp?, Josef sold his farm and applied for colony resettlement to Regula 4. Being a farmer still versed in ancient herding practices, the Romanov’s had no difficulties in being accepted.; 2254 The High Priestess (+1 P-Level)The attempt to flee did not g as planned. The colony ship was hijacked by pirates en-route to Regula. Josef was shot, trying to protect his children. Brother and sister were split up, claimed as booty by different ships. The next few months became a living hell for Tanya. A young, attractive girl, she was abused and passed between the officers on board the pirate vessel. The horror of her experiences sent her catatonic, mindlessly humming the melody of the music box - her only remaining possession. After a month, she was considered little more than a mindless sex slave and left to roam free aboard the ship. Finding herself alone one day on the bridge, she briefly regained sanity and hacked into the navigation computer. She had no idea of how interstellar travel worked, but discovered that close to their current location lay an alien territory marked as extremely dangerous. It was the ship’s proximity to the Vorlon systems which had kept the pirates hidden from Earthforce in the past. Tanya scrambled the links in the nav database so that the next jump would take the ship directly into Vorlon space, and then fled. Her further punishments though unspeakable were mercifully short. The pirates soon jumped again, this time to their doom… Tanya knew little of what occurred after the jump. Within moments she was overwhelmed by a feeling of horror. She could sense something ancient and terribly inhuman searching for her. She hid in a tool chest and withdrew into her head to the tune of the music box whilst the crew turned insane, madly killing one another. Thus it was only peripherally that she sensed the hunter come seeking her. It tore down her defences like paper, sorting and cataloguing her memories, cleaning her mind. Once it reached the point where she had resolved to destroy the pirates the being stopped and blocked the last few months of memories. Then it took her aboard a ship which in her dreams sang to her in her head, and took her to its home. A year passed in intensive training. She was not the first to be brought to the world for re-education, but she had been the first to instinctively seek it. What she had believed to be self destruction was revealed as a genetic imperative that had been freed by the abuse she had suffered at he hands of the pirates. The torture had allowed her to prove her resolve and worthiness to the Vorlon. Under their tuition she fulfilled her mental potential, and strengthened her will.; 2255 The Ace of Cups (Vorlon Agent Template)Time passed without notice, but a sense of purpose grew. Once her opinions and beliefs matched what her mentors required she was shown to one of their ships. ‘Fly between the stars until you hear what you seek. Go to it if it may be found, otherwise never return.’
Unlike the first Vorlon vessel she had travelled in, this ship was quiet. It responded to her will, but did not communicate with her. So she sailed alone into the darkness beyond the burning suns, and started her quest. Drifting from star to star she listened and meditated. Her thoughts flew great distances between worlds and she slowly learned to see without seeing and hear without hearing. Many worlds passed her by and she began to suffer self doubt and intense loneliness. Then her self purging and mental flagellation recalled the horrors of the pirates. Under all these strains her ego shattered and she at last found peace.
Only then did she hear the music of the spheres. A sound not unlike the music of her mother’s box, but infinitely more moving. She followed the sound to a small world, and it was then her ship spoke its first word to her, ‘Avalon’. Only a small wooded isle remained upon the surface of the wrecked planet, and that was hidden from casual eyes. She disembarked at a small clearing, and found a small group of humans called the Guardians of the Grall. The inhabitants had strange names from mythology, like Percyfal and bore themselves as if they were heroes.
She was shown a small pottery cup and told that she may drink from it. She sipped reverently from a legend known to the people of her home. Both pain and enlightenment swept through her, and she collapsed for three days as the power of the Grall slowly changed her. Her neck and heart ached from the modifications, but her mind could hear the singing of the objects around her, including her ship.
2256 The Ace of Swords (+1 to Intelligence)
Returning back to the Vorlon world on which she had been trained, she continued her education. She had been re-forged to expose her potential, but now she was given her edge.
Katya was taught about human history, and how the Vorlon had been guiding them to uplift. But human development was faltering, due to the efforts of an organisation calling itself the ‘PsyCorp?’. Instead of letting all humanity experience the joys of psychic evolution, the telepaths were segregated and kept apart. Without integration and freedom, humanity would hold mental uplift in fear. This PsiCorp? meddling was suspected to be under the control of another elder race. Dark shadows who could not be seen but whose actions could be sensed.
Her computing skills, persuasion, and observation were further trained to help her uncover the subtle traces of this shadowy influence.
2257 The Prince of Cups
At last after three years in Vorlon space, Katya was sent on her first mission. She journeyed to Beta Durani to uncover any information she could find about PsiCorp?. Although her power kept her mental inquiries unnoticed by most of the telepaths, the evidence of her tampering could not be erased. Slowly the PsiCorp? representatives pieced together a trail of clues and took action. Fearing a rogue telepath of high ability, they sent a request to Earth for PsiCop? support.
After seven months of fruitless investigation, Katya decided that more direct action was required. Hiring a number of less intelligent criminals to break into the PsiCorp? offices, she used the distraction to cover her own hacking attack on the Corp’s computer. The hack was successful, but the operation was traced by a Bloodhound who’d been waiting for just such an attempt. As she tried to return to the shuttle port, she was intercepted by the operative.
It was Uzo. Surprised by the re-appearance of her long lost brother, she appealed to him to join her and flee the planet. Uzo refused, stating that she was a blip and must be brought back to the welcoming arms of PsiCorp?. Katya told him what the Vorlons had told her, that telepaths should be free, but he dismissed the propaganda and pulled out his PPG. In desperation, Katya begged him to let her go since she was his only remaining family. ‘The Corp is Mother’ was his reply as he shot her.
Driven by survival instinct Katya drew and returned fire without thinking. Uzo collapsed with a hole in his chest. His sister fled with tears in her eyes and managed to pass customs before the security alert shut down off world travel. Once back in space, it was a simple matter to hitchhike back to the place she’d left her ship. She returned to Vorlon with the information she had discovered.
2258 Justice
Uzo’s actions left bitterness in Katya’s soul. They had twisted her brother from a happy boy to an emotionless man, removing love, family and joy from him. The anger grew when in the recovered PsiCorp? files she found records concerning herself (still missing) and her mother, who was recorded as committing suicide as a side effect of the pacifism drugs. Her resolve to act against the PsiCorp? became incandescent, and she requested further missions to undermine the organisation.
The tasks varied from sabotage to data recovery. Driven by a sense of justice, Katya became a weapon in the hands of her masters…
…exactly as the Vorlons had planned.
