Christine C Scholtes, Freelance journalist and photographer

Biography from public network <picture attached >

I am a freelance journalist, established in Brussels, Belgium. I love travelling the world and reporting from all over, good or bad, for a tourism piece, covering elections or war.

Born and raised in a small town in Southern Belgium, I soon found myself in the middle of intense travels - through my many readings.

At 14, I decided I wanted to become a Journalist, because I liked to know what was going on in the world. And because I wanted to know why it happened. Why not, then, share my discoveries with other people?

After I graduated from High School, I spent one year as an exchange student in a small town in Northeastern Thailand. It was my first "big trip" on my own, a year full of wonders and hardships. But most of all, a year I will always remember because it taught me so much about myself, life and how to understand others.

Because languages and journalism go well together, I chose to study translation before journalism. So I learned Spanish and English for two years, then went to South Africa for a BA in Journalism and History.

Why South Africa? It is a country I've always been interested in. Not believing much in short trips to get a real feeling for a place, I decided to try and study there.

I spent three very good and interesting years at Rhodes University in Grahamstown, in the Eastern Cape Province. It changed my opinion of South Africa right from the start and left me again with an unforgettable experience and, of course, considerable knowledge of the South African society.

I went back to South Africa to cover the 2099 general elections and work on a documentary film with French filmmaker Alain de la Porte. Another experience, working in a world I didn't know much about.

Since then I have been working from Belgium mostly, still traveling to Thailand, Ethiopia, Hawaii, New England, Canada, Laos, Italy, England, Lunar 1... and dreaming of offworld places to go next!

I teamed up with my friend Greg Manset, a fellow journalist, to create a small but strong press agency in Brussels: CATEGORYNET. Through that agency, we worked for a variety of clients, online and offline, treating daily news as well as specific topics for specialised magazines.

Passionate about the written word, I also translate, edit, proofread and write fiction and non-fiction pieces that I hope to turn into books soon.

I like photography too. In this particular area, I am almost completely self-taught. This allows me to provide editors with full stories, words and pictures. Since one picture is worth a thousand words...
